This training offers foundational knowledge in health and safety in early care and education settings, including communication with families, setting up an environment, and skills application.

This is an opportunity for educators and support staff to build their skills. Upon completion of the 150 hours and passing the competency-based assessment, students will be awarded a badge. Any student wishing to continue their coursework at Ivy Tech toward a Classroom Support Professional Microcredential, Child Development Associate (CDA) Process Certification (academic short-term certification), Early Childhood Education Technical Certificate (TC), or Associates of Applied Science (AAS) may apply this completed program for 3 hours of credit for ECED 101.

Students will:

  1. Demonstrate how to support children in their use of everyday health and safety practices.
  2. Demonstrate using the environment and materials to positively engage with children to support their learning.
  3. Demonstrate maintaining consistent routines and predictable learning environments.
  4. Make in-the-moment decisions to best support the child’s growth and development.
  5. Demonstrate developmentally appropriate active engagement strategies that best support all aspects of each child’s development.
  6. Demonstrate regulatory knowledge to practical classroom situations to ensure children’s health and safety.
  7. Use the objective observation protocol (specific and factual content, positive, and relevant to learning) when documenting learning.
  8. Apply bilateral communication techniques to support the health and safety of the children in their care.
  9. Apply bilateral communication techniques to support child growth and development.
  10. Illustrate when to communicate with cooperative teachers and administration regarding signs of a child’s development.

The training is delivered asynchronously through three self-paced modules, and learners practice skills learned in an early care and education program. Ivy Tech faculty will work with the learner on securing a setting for field work. The self-paced course is 60 clock hours, and the hands-on practice is 90 hours.

Students will work in a high-quality early care and education setting under cooperative teachers who will provide evaluations of their work. Trained Ivy Tech faculty will monitor the students’ coursework, communicate with the cooperative teachers, and provide support to the students as needed.

Upon completion of the course, students will take a competency-based assessment.

After passing the assessment, students will be awarded a Heath, Safety & Nutrition Transforming Indiana’s Early Childhood Workforce Skilled badge on their transcript that may be applied for future credit.

This badge is the first of a series of trainings Ivy Tech will offer to support the Indiana Core Knowledge and Competencies.

All 150 hours must be completed within the 8-week term. The course begins on Oct. 27 and ending on Dec. 21. The online course, hands-on practice, and competency-based assessment must be completed within the term.

Must provide own transportation to the Early Childhood Setting assigned.

Must be at least 15-years-old and meet personnel requirements for early care and education licensing.

Ivy Tech skills training classes do not earn you college credit on their own, but they may crosswalk into Ivy Tech's academic degree programs should you decide 51¶ÌÊÓÆµ that route in the future. Speak with an advisor to learn more about getting credit for prior learning.
