TRIO Student Support Services Coordinator

Performs a variety of moderately complex tasks related to supporting college students who are low-income, first generation and students with disabilities. The Academic Coordinator/Counselor is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and coordination of functions that may include student advising, assessment, intervention strategies, transfer, retention, disability services, community outreach and student activities.

LOCATION: Gary with some travel to other campus locations in East Chicago and Crown Point. Some regional or statewide travel may be required.

PAY RANGE: $40,000 - 45,000 per year

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists TRIO Director in the selection, utilization and evaluation of standardized diagnostic, placement career and achievement assessment, evaluate student progress and make modifications to student goals for success.

  • Coordinates the academic support to students by working with director to develop individualized plans and by providing direction for academic skill development.

  • Supervise and help select ESL, Health and other academic tutors.

  • Maintain close ties with English, Math, and Science departments to keep abreast of skill needs and course requirements.

  • Maintain close ties with Regional Faculty and Administration regarding student life, transfer and retention college functions.

  • Assist Director in evaluation of academic and assessment needs.

  • Assists Director in supervising SSS staff: counselors, and tutors, and work study students.

  • Manage tutoring program/supervise and assign tutors.

  • Coordinate E-profiles, review and make recommendations.

  • Counsel students with respect to career assessment and decision-making. Maintain close ties with Career Services.

  • Provide in-depth counseling regarding skills necessary to academic success (time management, study skills). Counsels students in regard to course selection, scheduling, future goals, and other academic issues.

  • Assess, document and monitor progress of SSS students.

  • Assist in organization and maintenance of reports.

  • Input SSS data input/file management

  • Coordinate and plan disability services and student accommodations with SSS Disability Specialist/Counselor, college disability and veteran’s offices.

  • Determine student’s eligibility for financial aid through the use of federal income guidelines, and assessment of needs. Maintain close ties with the Admissions, Advising, Registrar and Financial Aid Offices.

  • Maintains student electronic academic files and monitors student progress; identify academic problems and provides guidance and referrals.

  • Refers students to outside agencies for guidance and support, as appropriate.

  • Serve as a liaison between students and faculty to resolve any problems or difficulties.

  • Develop and implement workshops for program students including determining place and times, organizing materials, and publicizing events.

  • Assists in supervising staff by scheduling employees, assigning tasks and monitoring performance.

  • Conduct all activities within the established guidelines of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

EDUCATION:Ìý

  • Bachelor’s Degree required and preferred in Counseling, Education, Higher Education, or a related field.Ìý

  • Master’s degree preferred. At least one year of TRIO experience or previous college advising preferred.

EXPERIENCE:Ìý

  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience working in higher education or working with students or community members in underserved communities

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:

  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Products and Virtua platforms in order to perform Academic Coordinator/Counselor functions as described above.

  • Must have an excellent command of professional presentation skills and be comfortable presenting to college and community constituencies.

  • Knowledge of counseling techniques, administering and interpreting surveys and inventories, gathering and entering data statistics, developing and facilitating study skills, personal improvement, and financial literacy seminars.

  • Knowledge of Student Development Theory a plus.

  • Ability to work well with individuals with diverse backgrounds specifically with low-income, first generation students, and students with disabilities in need of academic assistance

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass criminal background check.
